在雷鬼樂還沒成為主流音樂前，努力推廣雷鬼音樂的先鋒之一John Holt，60年代即出道，身為The Paragons樂團成員而知名度大增，由John撰寫/演唱的〈The Tide Is High〉、〈Man Next Door〉等經典曲目，至今仍有無數藝人/團體翻唱。70年代事業登上高峰，憑藉翻唱美國鄉村歌手Kris Kristofferson的歌曲〈Help Me Make It Through the Night〉，順利打入英國排行前十名，後續翻唱Billy Joel的〈Just the Way You Are〉、Diana Ross的〈Touch Me in the Morning〉多次打入排行榜。2004年獲得牙買加政府頒發卓越勳章。
