Joan Chandos Baez was born on January 9, 1941, in Staten Island, of a physicist
father, a Mexican born, raised in Brooklyn and a mother born in Scotland in 1913. The Baez family
moved regularly according to professional assignments of the father. Joan Baez and her two sisters
spent the year 1951 in Baghdad. While in Iraq, Joan will face endemic poverty and everyday violence.
These facts will give birth in her, feelings of compassion and empathy. In 1952, Albert Baez established
his family in California. Joan is 13 years old when she attends a concert of Pete Seeger whose
repertoire will mark her durably. Her first instrument is a Ukulele on which she reproduces the first folk
songs she had heard. Her parents dislike this practice which, in their mind, inevitably leads to the use
of drugs! Her «Hispanic» origins make her taste the joys of ostracism and discrimination. Her pacifist
culture leads her to be magnanimous if not understanding. In 1956, she attended a conference hosted
by Rev. Martin Luther King. In 1957 she acquired her first guitar and the music took the first place of
her concerns. In June 1958 she graduated from the Palo Alto High School. She made her first demos
in San Francisco for an album project that will not see the light of day. In August 1958, new move to
Belmont, Massachusetts. Listed at Boston University, Joan is more concerned about her singing career
than attending classes. She is involved in various causes such as the defense of civil rights. Joan
Baez begins to perform on the local club scene. Her first real performance took place at Club 47 in
Cambridge. She receives ＄ 10 and will be offered a commitment, two nights a week, each paid ＄ 25. In
May 1959, with Bill Wood and Ted Alevizos, she took part in the album project Round Harvard Square
published by Veritas Records. She sings six solo songs, three duets with Bill and Do not Weep After Me
as a trio. In addition to Pete Seeger and his emulator Bob Gibson, her models are African-American
singers Marian Anderson and Odetta. On July 11, 1959, Bob Gibson invites Joan to join him on the
stage of the Newport Folk Festival. The organizers will immediately propose to Joan to be part of the
next edition of the Festival on June 24, 1960. Spotted simultaneously by the producers of the Ogre
Columbia and those of the Petit-Poucet Vanguard, she will sign with the last ones in order to guarantee
greater freedom. Her debut album, produced by Fred Hellerman of the Weavers, was released in
November 1960 and meets a success as wide as instantaneous. On November 5th she gives her
first concert in New York, six days before appearing on the stage of The Town Hall. In April 1961, at
the Gerde's Folk City, Mecca of protesting musicians, she meets with Bob Dylan. In September 1961,
Vanguard releases her second studio album prior to her first national tour. She will take care to avoid
all places that practice segregation. In the southern states, she will choose to perform exclusively in
colleges reserved for blacks. On November 23, 1962, she appears on the cover of Time Magazine. It
took less than two years for Joan Baez to establish herself as the most emblematic figure of folk song.
