本教材以TED演講為素材，精選了20個演講，每個演講自成一單元，每單元圍繞演講主題設計多種練習題型，以培養學生的聽、說、讀、寫能力。
除語言技能外，本教材更強調學生的獨立思辨能力。本教材力圖摒棄傳統聽力、聽說教材以「聽材料做練習」為主的教學模式，鼓勵學生在掌握演講主旨的基礎上發表自己的獨立見解，對人生、社會進行思索，並且去行動、去改變。
本教材嘗試集知識、趣味、思想於一體，培養學生的綜合素質，以突破英語聽力、聽說課作為一門語言技能課的窠臼。
