Phonemic awareness is the understanding that words are made up of sounds. It is also the ability to pick out and manipulate sounds in spoken words. Phonemic awareness is not the same thing as phonic. Phonemic awareness deals with sounds in spoken words, whereas phonics involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols. Therefore, phonics deals with learning sound-spelling relationship and is associated with print. Most phonemic awareness tasks, however, are purely oral.
The phonemic awareness activities in this book can be used to supplement and enhance any reading program. They are ideal for use as warm-up exercises before phonics or other language arts instruction.
Most of the activities in the book can be used for instructional purposes. However, the games and activity pages are not intended for the initial introduction or instruction of skills. Rather, they are intended for practice and review.
