　　Who dreamed that beauty passes like a dream?
　　For these red lips, with all their mournful pride,

　　Troy passed away in one high funeral gleam,

　　愛貫穿了葉慈的生命，也貫穿於他所有的詩歌當中。在他的人生和詩集裡，愛是嚴肅而又聖潔，美麗而又痛苦的。他將青春、愛情連同死亡一同糅進循環往復、錯綜神祕的時空背景裡互相對視。

　　沒有任何人能夠像葉慈一樣，能將愛情讚頌發展到如此極致，甚至超越愛情中的人而存在。在這久遠、遼闊的時空裡，葉慈在孜孜不倦地構建著自己的、也是人類永恆的命題——生命、尊嚴、青春、愛情，抒寫著他對人類無限的愛。

作者簡介

威廉．巴特勒．葉慈（William Butler Yeats，1865—1939）　　

　　愛爾蘭著名詩人、劇作家和散文家，愛爾蘭文藝復興運動的領袖。

　　出生於愛爾蘭一個充滿藝術氣息的家庭。小時候曾在英國倫敦居住一段時間，因母親時常講述愛爾蘭民間故事，加上與英國同儕的不睦，讓他有了民族意識，在往後時常表現出他對愛爾蘭的赤誠之心。

　　民族意識強烈的葉慈，在結識了愛國志士約翰．奧里亞雷後，也開始接觸愛爾蘭本土詩人的作品，作品開始出現愛爾蘭民俗和民間故事。1896年透過友人牽線認識格雷戈里夫人，與之一同發起愛爾蘭文藝復興運動，

　　1923年，葉慈獲得諾貝爾文學獎，成為獲此殊榮的第一位詩人。1934年又獲得哥德堡詩歌獎。晚年葉慈百病纏身，依然筆耕不輟，創作了許多膾炙人口的詩歌，被艾略特譽為「20世紀最偉大的英語詩人」。
