The essays in this book present an evolving perspective on literacy translation, with special reference to the Malay world. They begin with three early papers that are personally reflective, becoming more theoretical as they outline the major premises of the new and exciting academic discipline of Translation Studies. Drawing on current translation theory, they then deal in detail with the translation of Indonesian poetry and the work of such major authors as Abdullah Munshi, Kemala, Shahnon Ahmad and Muhammad Haji Salleh.
Professor Harry Aveling (Ph.D, Malay Studies, National University of Singapore; Doctor of Creative Arts, University of Technology, Sydney) holds honorary appointments in Translation Studies, Monash University and Asian Studies, La Trobe University, Melbourne Australia. He has translated extensively from Malay and Indonesian, and was awarded the Anugerah Pengembangan Sastera Esso/Gapena 1991 for his commitment to the international understanding of Malay literature. UKM Press has previously published his highly regarded book, Shahnon Ahmad: Islam, Power and Gender (2000) one of the first full-length studies of a Malay author.
