Jalaini Abu Hassan, or more fondly, “Jai”, is a contemporary painter, educator and artistic researcher who has been immersed in the development of local art since the late 1980s, also holding exhibitions in Southeast Asia and internationally. His work often refers to history, culture and society in revealing the cosmological narrative of the Malay world, as seen most clearly in the series Chanang (2008), Bisik Menjerit (2009), Dendongeng (2010), Bangsawan Kebangsaan (2010), Bingkai Berangkai (2012), Dato Rock (2014) and Cerpan Cerpen (2018). In recent years, he has brought together the realms of painting and writing in his work, applying elements of Malay literature through poetry and prose, as a new starting point in his quest to expand his trajectory as an artist.
In the academic arena, Jalaini has served as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for almost 30 years, and is also Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Malaya. In 2018, he received the UiTM University Academic Award and 13th National Academic Award.
